Platinum Scraps was originally launched February of 2010 as a vision of several friends who met on the Cricut Message board who wanted to venture out into creating, sharing, and showcasing the many talents each of us possess. Platinum Scraps showcases the diversity in scrapbooking and features designers from all walks of life. To keep the tradition going, each week our design team is challenged to create a unique layout or card based on a sketch that exemplifies their skills and talents. We hope that we inspire your creations and we appreciate your continued love and support as we grow together.

Thank You

Pkaysunshine has created a card for her daughter's teacher.

Teachers are the life line in our child's education.  So many times, pay is never enough.  If our child is blessed to have a teacher who gives selflessly of themselves, we should be appreciative of all the things they do to benefit our child.

Hi

The spotlight shines today on a beautiful card created by Trell.  He is our newest designer but he has created quite a buzz on his personal blog with his creative cards.  He says his style is clean and simple.  Trell states that it's not about how many supplies you have but it's all about how you create with those supplies.

His creation for this week is titled simply, "HI". Trell used a mixture of mediums to create this card.  He painted the cardboard element with a mix of Vanilla, Lemon Ice, Grey, and Robin's Egg Blue acrylic paint by Jo-Ann Essentials.

If you would like to showcase a card from this week's sketch, hop over here, create your project, then upload to our blog using the simply linked widget below.

Curlylocdiva brings us a card that has sugar, spice, everything nice plus a little bling.  Bling is a scrapper's best friend.  Don't you just love the stamped image.  The Copic markers just bounce off the page.  The little girl makes me think of the sunny days of summer, where eating fruit and playing in the grass make life stand still and everyday simple pleasures a must.

Friends Til The End

Today's card was created by Princess.

Princess asked....."Do you have an eye for things you have in your stash?"

This card was easy to create. I first started with the flowers that look so much like the sketch. When I found this DCWV paper stack I laid eyes on the pokie dots and immediately went to my pokie dot brads. The black & white papers in this stack are so pretty and versatile. I only used five of the sheets. They can compliment any color. Finally I went to my rub ons and there it was.....a purple sentiment 'Friends Til the End'.  Add all of these ingredients together and you have a great card.

We would love to see your take on the card.  You can view this week's sketch here, create your card, then upload to our blog using the simply linked wizard below.

Achievements by: SanuraScraps

Here is SanuraScraps take on this weeks sketch. To see the sketch click here.

"Achievements" - SanuraScraps
This sketch made me think of my daughters awards ceremonies. The number border took the place of the scallop and I added a bit more embellishment. I used less pictures because I don't have any that is as small as the sketch. Lastly, doodling was a must! There was plenty and ample opportunity to make the pages pieces "pop."

Used: Recollectons cardstock, Lost and Found
Cricut: Locker Talk, Art Philohsophy
Jelly Roll - White pen
Tim Holtz distress inks: Barnyard door

Join us tomorrow for another take on the sketch.

Juneteenth 2012

Juneteenth is an annual observance on June 19 to remember when Union soldiers enforced the Emancipation Proclamation and freed all remaining slaves in Texas on June 19, 1865. This day is an opportunity for people to celebrate freedom and equal rights in the United States.

What do people do?

A range of public, community and private events are held to celebrate Juneteenth, often on a weekend close to June 19. These include:
  • Baseball games.
  • Pot luck outdoor cookouts, barbecues or picnics.
  • Workplace lunches.
  • Rodeos.
  • Neighborhood or block parties.
  • Community flag raising ceremonies.
  • Juneteenth displays in city halls, libraries, schools and post offices.
  • Essay or artwork competitions for young people.
  • Presentations of community service awards.
  • The distribution of Juneteenth buttons, t-shirts, mugs and bags.
Some people also decorate conference rooms or corridors at their workplace, their neighborhood and yards with Juneteenth banners, yard signs and flags to raise awareness of the event.

Public life

Juneteenth is a partial or full state holiday, or an official observance in about half of the US states, including Alaska, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Florida, Idaho, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Louisiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Carolina, Texas, Tennessee, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin, Washington and Wyoming.
In some states, people employed by the state have a day off work. Stores, post offices and other organizations and businesses are likely to be open as usual, but some may be closed or have restricted opening hours in some areas. Many public transit services operate to their usual schedule, but there may be some changes. There may be some local disruption to traffic around large scale public events.

Background

In the United States, slavery began shortly after the first English colonists arrived and lasted until the Emancipation Proclamation came into effect on January 1, 1863. On that date Texas was largely controlled by forces fighting for the Confederate States, which opposed the abolition of slavery. On June 19, 1865, Union soldiers arrived to take control of Texas and enforce the emancipation of slaves in the state. In Galveston, Texas, the newly freed slaves held large public celebrations and so laid the base for future Juneteenth activities. The word 'Juneteenth' resulted from the words 'June Nineteenth' being slurred together in speech.
After 1865, Juneteenth was mainly celebrated in Texas. Parks have been established on land bought by former slaves to hold Juneteenth celebrations in the Texan cities of Austin, Houston and Mexia. However, it is now a state holiday or observance in more than half of the US states and there is a campaign for Juneteenth to become a national holiday or observance throughout the nation.  Juneteenth celebrations are also held in other countries around the world, including Ghana, Honduras, Japan, Taiwan and Trinidad and Tobago.

Symbols

The Juneteenth flag consists of a rectangle. The lower part of the rectangle is red and the upper part is blue and it has a solid white, five-pointed star at its center. The star is surrounded by a white outline of a 12-pointed star. The Juneteenth flag is often displayed with the United States flag to symbolize that slavery is illegal.
In Texas and some other southern states, the traditional drink on Juneteenth is Big Red soda. This variety of cream soda is a sweet, soft drink flavored with orange and lemon oils and vanilla. It is available in different flavors and with or without caffeine and sugar.

Super Star

Drum Roll Please....  It is with great pleasure that I am announcing a new designer joining the Platinum Scraps Card Challenge Team.  We welcome our newest designer, Trell.

Trell said...

Hello,  I am a lifelong resident of Alabama. I started papercrafting in November of 2010, and boy have I come a long way since then. I consider myself to be primarily a card-maker and stamper. I have a bit of a ribbon addiction (saddle stitch or grosgain, thank you), and it is a rare occasion that one of my cards isn't adorned with a bow. I think my style meter is pointed towards Shabby Chic/Vintage. Interestingly, I find that my card making style is directly influenced by my interior design style. In college, my major was interior design - so I guess you can say that I have a bit of an eye. When I am not making cards, I'm probably working. I fell into the Gap almost 9 years ago, and I've been working there since!

I am excited to join the Platinum Scraps team. I look forward to learning new things and being inspired from my fellow members. I also hope that I can inspire others to be creative. I think creativity is a gift that should be cultivated and shared.

Remember, we would love to see your take on this week's sketch.  Just click here to view the sketch, create your project, then upload to the blog using the simply linked widget below.

Butterfly Birthday by: Craftin' Curt

Here is Curt's takes on this week's card sketch. To see the sketch click here

I made this card with a specific person in mind. She loves butterflies and that became my motivation for this card. The base paper is handmade and has a very nice, natural texture to it. Cor'dinations makes a superb glitter paper that doesn't flake off as some other brands do. The two-tones of the glitter papers pick up the color story in the K & Company background paper. The background paper's floral design reminds me of the symmetry of butterfly wings and seemed like a perfect choice. I made use of my Epic 6 and its circle dies (which are GREAT!) and cut two circles of different sizes. I inked their edges in hot pink and pale pink to add some dimension to the butterfly's "home." The candle ribbon reinforces the sentiment (done with chalk-inked Tim Holtz grunge paper die cuts) and matches colors in the K & Company butterfly embellishment. All-in-all, a simple but effective card to wish someone a happy birthday.

The Best Mom

Hello Platinum Scrappers thanks for joining us for the reveal of the last take  on this weeks sketch which can be found here  brought to you by Jojorenee.
Best Mom
Tamika  says: Working with this sketch was particularly difficult because no clear view of what to do with it would come to mind.  “Challenges make you discover things about yourself that you never really knew. They're what make the instrument stretch-what make you go beyond the norm.” I had a lot of do overs and cover ups but I am pleased with the outcome finally.

Umm Umm Good

Umm, Umm Good by: tsrel

Today's post is a twist on the sketch.  Tonya always scraps two page layouts.  So yes it is a challenge to tell your story on a two page sketch that was originally designed for a one page.  Last week we had a designer do just the opposite.  She created a one page layout from a two page.  Diversity is the name in scrapbooking.  It's all in your imagination.  Just start a project and let your creative juices flow.

The layout today features her granddaughter Symone and newphew, Jamarian sharing a popsicle on a lazy summer day.

Say Cheese by: Phillyscraps

Today we have Phillyscraps take on the sketch by Sketchabilities.  What a lovely page.  I love all the flowers and little doilies.  They say pictures speak a thousand words, but in this case that smile or should I say that look of mischievousness speaks ten thousand.  Would have loved to have a mental seat when these photos were taken.  Great example of how we can turn a simple sketch into a work of art.

Berry Sweet by: SanuraScraps

This week we will be showcasing Layouts using a sketch from Sketchabilities

The pictures and paper are a great combination. This Layout is perfect for the month of June, reminds me of Summer Fun in the Sun

This layout is about our (my children and I) trip to the strawberry farm in McDonough, Georgia. It was a warm and sunny day and the strawberries were ripe and just ready for picking. We had a ball! We picked 2 gallons of strawberries and loved the way they smelled. The animals were out chilling in the sun as well as many other people. I saw the sketch (especially the banner) and thought that strawberries would be great for that.
